A visit to Umbria would not be complete without exploring Orvieto, best known for its impressive medieval Duomo (cathedral), Etruscan ruins and Orvieto Classico wine. You will understand why Orvieto is known as the "city of the cliff" on our approach from below when you see it rise majestically above the almost vertical rock cliffs topped by the ancient defensive walls built of the same Tufa stone.

There will be time to visit the main sites and attractions, cross some gifts and souvenirs off your shopping list, enjoy a relaxing lunch at your pace and partake in the Italian tradition of slurping on a gelato while you wander the streets and squares of Orvieto.

Since you are so close, it would be a great shame to miss the opportunity to discover nearby Civita di Bagnoregio, one of the most photographed hilltop villages in the region which is quickly becoming a must-see destination of its own. Part of this twelve hundred year old village's charm is that it can only be reached on foot via a suspended 300 metre long footbridge (not for the feint hearted). On a misty day, this tiny town's clocktower and small cluster of surrounding buildings seem to poke their heads above a sea of clouds as if to say "we are still standing".
